Self Advocates of Mecklenburg County

Transportation is a big issue for our people in the Self-Advocates of Meck. We do at least have a bus system in Charlotte which is good-InReach has another office in Union County in Monroe and they don’t even have a regular bus so they have to depend on their parents or staff to take them places.
The bus does not go everywhere and we have some people who do not live on the bus line or they have to walk a mile or so to the nearest bus and some of our people with some physical challenges being able to walk that far to get a bus is hard for them to do.
Some people can take STS which is special transportation that comes right to your house and takes you where you need to go but it is not always reliable and if someone does not live on the bus line then STS is not an option for them.
The other week my co-worker Gudrun-(who takes STS) had to wait over 2 hours for her bus to arrive and we were supposed to close at 4:30 but she was still here so we could not close until her bus arrived at 5:00 and she got off work at 2:30 so that is just ridiculous.
