What is "I Get Around"?

“I Get Around” is an initiative funded by the North Carolina Council on Developmental Disabilities (NCCDD) that aims to improve transportation options for individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities (I/DD).

This website was made to complement this initiative and create awareness—within the greater Duke and Durham communities—around the difficult realities that people in the I/DD Community face on a regular basis and to show the link between transportation and inclusion of the I/DD Community.

This semester, our team undertook a research project, working with the NCCDD (North Carolina Council on Developmental Disabilities) and the Alliance of Disability Advocates (ADA) to uncover why transportation is an issue for people in the I/DD Community, find solutions that have been proposed on a national scale, identify gaps in research, and suggest possible solutions and areas for future research.

With our collection of personal narratives and a myriad of statistics, we aim to communicate the importance of transportation reform for justice, inclusion, and an overall better quality of life for people in the I/DD Community.
