DEMOGRAPHICS & TRAVEL PATTERNS

OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

Significant improvements in the pedestrian network should occur because pedestrian barriers are most frequently cited as the barrier for people with disabilities. Many people with disabilities lack an accessible route to an accessible bus stop or other community-based transportation.

We see huge contrast between usage of private vehicles and any other form of shared transportation–public bus, subway, light rail, paratransit systems, etc.

From empirical data we see that it is prevalent that people with disability often use private vehicle for transportation. However, we should not jump to the conclusion that private vehicle is the solution to the widespread transportation problem. Private cars may, in fact, be the response and result of nonuse of public transportation rather than the cause of it.
